Jack, surely you must be kidding, right". None of these are really modern, but they are variations of very old themes.

OK good, I thought you were another newbie w/o a clue. My satire catches people off guard sometimes too.

The instructions they link to for picking a Master combination lock don't work, at least on the locks I've tried.
http://www.wikihow.com/Crack-a-%22Ma...mbination-Lock

At where I work there is a wall of employee lockers, and standing around one day a couple of us got bored and started playing with the locks on other people's lockers. With most of the cheap non-Master combination locks, you do not need to know the number to get them open. You can just pull down on the lock body while slowly turning the dial, and you can feel the shackle "give" a bit when you hit a number of the combination. Then you reverse direction but keep turning until you hit the next number, and reverse again to hit the third number. It don't take a lot of brains to do.

With the Master-brand locks though (yes, the cheap ones) the dial has internal "notches" in it, in-between every single digit. So you cannot turn the dial at all if the lock's shackle is under tension. We couldn't unlock any of the Masters this way at all. It might still be possible to do, but it's not nearly as easy.

Hm, nice catchy name - Life Hacker.

I have seen enough to say skip learning how to lock pick unless you're willing to invest serious time into the art. Instead, pick up a bump key set if inclined to do that sort of stuff.

Intro on the subject:

I think that's the most modern way to open a locked door. I would have come up with a different list but the article was mildly inspiring.

If this is what people consider survival skills, boy are they going to be in for a rude awakening.

As a locksmith, I must say, that locksmith on the YouTube is a total idiot. It is one thing to sell anti-bumping hardware to the public and educate them on the dangers of lock manipulation, it is totally different when you teach, on the local news, locksmith techniques. IDIOT!
